UN special envoy for Libya

(Libya Twitter)--- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said here Tuesday that his special envoy to Libya, Abdelilah Al-Khatib, will travel to Benghazi, the stronghold of Libyan rebels, on Friday.

Diplomatic efforts focus on securing a ceasefire and achieving a political solution," he said. "On Friday, my special envoy, Mr. Al-Khatib, will travel once again to Benghazi."

Benghazi, a city of more than one million people, is the stronghold for rebels in the east of Libya.

Earlier this month, Al-Khatib held talks in the embattled North African country with both rebels and the government of Muammar Gaddafi.

Also vital United Nations relief assistance has arrived by sea and by air in the Libyan cities of Benghazi and Misrata in the past couple of days, as fighting continues to rage between the tovernment and rebels seeking the ouster of Colonel Muammar Al-Qadhafi.

A statement released by the UN Information Centre in Accra said in eastern Libya, a plane chartered by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has arrived in Benghazi carrying hospital tents, kitchen sets and plastic sheets for shelter.

Humanitarian aid has arrived in the Libyan cities of Misrata and Benghazi over the last few days, the UN reported on Tuesday.

In Misrata, a ship belonging to the World Food Program (WFP) has docked. The ship, which is the second to land in the city this month, carried 500 tons of food as well as three ambulances, drinking water, and medical supplies, according to WFP.

Conditions still remain bad in Misrata, where, according to Andrej Mahecic, a spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), people have been hiding in their homes.

According to UNHCR, the hospital tents will go to aid groups in Benghazi, and the other supplies will be distributed to vulnerable people in the city and in Ajdabiya and Misrata in addition to third-country migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.
